Several years ago I returned home after a year-long round-the world-trip. I'd worked, played and volunteered in nine different countries. I'd immersed myself in different cultures. I'd ridden elephants and snorkelled with whale sharks. I'd crewed on a yacht in the Indonesian Spice Islands and camped in the Australian outback. It felt like I'd been away for years.
The friends and relatives I'd left behind seemed surprised to see me back. "Wow, that year went quickly!" was a typical response. My friends back home had lived through the same time period I had, but they'd experienced time differently.
